why does the computer move so much faster

the opponent has the same top speed vector as the player. He is just a bit more focused once he chooses a target. You can slow him down temporarily by grabbing the mud, or speed yourself up by grabbing the newspapers. The same goes for the opponent, though. If he grabs the mud, you slow down, or if he grabs the paper he speeds up for a while.
